Traveling has become very popular in recent history. Today, people are more likely to travel than their parents or grandparents were. Sometimes we don’t even consider the huge distances we travel and only worry about jet lag. With all the places we can go now, the world feels like it keeps getting smaller.
And guess what? That’s great. We can now experience and understand other cultures. We’re able to experience how other people live and work. But, there are some things you should know about before traveling.
1. Surprisingly, most travelers don’t research even basic details about the country they plan to visit. This really is a crucial part of your holiday planning so that you avoid any surprises or disappointments.
2. It’s a good idea to check on the type of weather that is expected for your destination. That’s so you can understand what clothes you need to pack for your stay. It should go without saying, but check the average temperatures and weather conditions for the time of year you’ll be there. As an example, it’s actually winter in Australia from June to August, and in most of the Southern Hemisphere as well.
3. Be sure your travel insurance covers you properly for your destination and for the length of your stay. You DO have travel insurance – right?
4. It’s true – the whole world runs on paperwork. Be certain that you’ve got all the proper documents required for your trip. Passports, visas, immunization records, etc. If you don’t have all your ducks in a row, you could be turned away at the airport or at the point of entry. Be absolutely certain of what’s needed and make sure you get it.
5. Tell your doctor about your trip and find out if you need to be immunized before you go. Better safe than sorry.
6. If you plan to be driving during your holiday, ensure that your license will be accepted in that country. You might need to obtain an international drivers license. It’s also a good idea to be familiar with the local driving laws.
7. And now for the most important part – is your passport up-to-date? If not, do you have time to renew it or apply for one? Note: some countries will turn you away if your passport has less than a month left. Check it right now!
